About the Role

Reporting to the Workshop Foreman, the HGV Mechanic is responsible for executing high-standard vehicle maintenance to ensure the total legal compliance of our fleet. You will handle both planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and unscheduled repairs, ensuring all actions are meticulously documented using our dedicated vehicle maintenance software.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnostics & Repair: Inspect, diagnose, and repair vehicle faults in strict accordance with the DVSA’s Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness.

  • MOT Excellence: Strive for a 100% first-time MOT pass rate (maintaining a minimum 95% average).

  • Maintenance Logistics: Ensure all equipment and vehicles are serviced in a timely manner to minimize downtime and support the Service Delivery Department.

  • Roadside Assistance: Attend vehicle breakdowns at the roadside or customer premises to perform repairs, request workshop diagnosis, or coordinate recovery.

  • Documentation: Record all works accurately within the company’s digital maintenance records system.

  • Operational Coordination: Communicate daily with key colleagues and shift supervisors to ensure smooth workshop flow and immediate reporting of any issues.

  • Parts & Procurement: Ensure parts requests are accurate and authorized to prevent repair delays.

  • Safety & Housekeeping: Maintain a clean, organized workshop; wear required PPE at all times and report any defective workshop equipment immediately.

Skills and Experience

  • Technical Background: Proven experience working within a professional HGV workshop.

  • Certification: IRTEC Inspection Technician status is preferred (training can be provided within the first 6 months for the right candidate).

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of the DVSA’s Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness and the categorization of defects.

  • Legislative Awareness: Solid grasp of current transport legislation and a commitment to staying updated on industry changes.

  • Requirements: Candidates must possess their own tools.
